Sony has quietly released a new version of the PlayStation 3 Slim. Entitled “CECH-2100A”, it features a new RSX chip which has been shrunk to 45nm. The previous chip that was in the launch version of the Slim was 65nm. The included Cell CPU remains at 45nm. Sony has also changed the RAM configuration with the new revision, opting to use two 128MB XDR Ram chips instead of the four 64MB modules found in the pre-existing version.
Thanks to these tweaks, the cooling system doesn’t need to be as aggressive, and there’s now a new lighter power supply in the console to accommodate for that. The new revision also makes the console cheaper for Sony to manufacture.
