Todd Hollenshead has confirmed that id Tech 5 will not be licensed out to third party developers and publishers like the unreal engine. id Tech 5 was launched at QuakeCon 2007, alongside flagship title Rage. It was originally going to be a middleware platform to rival the unreal engine, but when id Software was acquired by ZeniMax Media in 2009 it didn’t look likely.
