Apple has finally slapped a date on their Mac App Store. It will be released on January 6th and will be available to OSX Snow Leopard users in 90 countries at launch. The app itself will be free. Purchased apps will run on all the user’s personal Macs, with updates getting delivered directly through the app store. Developers keep 70% of sales revenue and aren’t charged for free apps. They don’t have to pay any hosting fees either.
“The App Store revolutionised mobile apps,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”
We hope these silly app stores won’t catch on. We like finding and downloading things through other methods and controlling what we have ourselves. Apple needs to stop treating their users like babies and give them back control, but we all know that won’t happen.
