id Software has reminded us that their first ever game is now 20 years old. That title was the good old-school side-scroller Commander Keen. It was released on 14th December 1990, a whole two months before id Software was officially founded. “My childhood was pretty much made up of Mario games on the console, and Commander Keen on the PC,” said id Software’s Mike Rubits.
ZeniMax Media has secured another $150 million from Providence Equity Partners, to be spent on “increased game development”, “strategic acquisitions and “expanded publishing operating”. The company already own Bethesda, id Software, Splash Damage and Arkane Studios. Providence Equity Partners put $300 million into ZeniMax only three years ago. id Software technical director John Carmack has unveiled a tech demo of Rage running at 60fps on iPhone during his keynote at QuakeCon 2010. It took Carmack two weeks to get the demo up and running. Todd Hollenshead has confirmed that id Tech 5 will not be licensed out to third party developers and publishers like the unreal engine. id Tech 5 was launched at QuakeCon 2007, alongside flagship title Rage. It was originally going to be a middleware platform to rival the unreal engine, but when id Software was acquired by ZeniMax Media in 2009 it didn’t look likely.
Id Software has today announced the availability of two subscription packages for Quake Live. Players will still be able to play for free, but there are now some other options for the high rollers amongst you.
