Todd Hollenshead has confirmed that id Tech 5 will not be licensed out to third party developers and publishers like the unreal engine. id Tech 5 was launched at QuakeCon 2007, alongside flagship title Rage. It was originally going to be a middleware platform to rival the unreal engine, but when id Software was acquired by ZeniMax Media in 2009 it didn’t look likely.
ZeniMax Media has announced that they have completed the acquisition of Arkane Studios. The studio will join Bethesda and id Software as an internal studio for Bethesda Softworks. Arkane has offices in Lyon (France) and Austin (Texas). They developed Dark Messiah of Might and Magic on the PC and contributed to various games throughout their brief existence, including BioShock 2.
“We are very pleased to be able to bring another experienced, high quality developer like Arkane to the ZeniMax group of studios,” said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media. “Raphael and his talented team have earned a reputation for creating immersive, innovative games which enhances our ability to deliver AAA quality games to our many fans.”

Interplay has confirmed that they are seeking beta sign-ups for Fallout Online on the game’s new website. The website is loading a little slow right now, which is unsurprising given Interplay’s legal and financial difficulties. Bethesda owns the Fallout IP after they brought it from Interplay, but have now leased it back to the old-school publisher for the MMO version. Don’t expect the crazy first-person style of Fallout 3 though; Interplay wants to make an old-school third person style game.
Bethesda has announced that Brink has been delayed until spring 2011. Splash Damage is working away on the FPS, which will be released on the PS3, 360 and PC. Expect single player, multiplayer, stylish environments and some solid gameplay. Splash Damage has hired some experienced developers for this so we have high hopes.

Bethesda has released the E3 2010 trailer for Fallout: New Vegas. The trailer shows off a few new things, such as the 1887 Shotgun, Browning HP Pistol, M79 GL and poker, amongst dudes in cool suits and dinosaurs. It’s shaping up rather nicely, so standby your pip-boys and expect to hear more about it at E3 and beyond.
Bethesda has announced their line-up for this year’s E3. They will be showing and giving hands-on time with Brink (developed by Splash Damage), Fallout: New Vegas (developed by Obsidian Entertainment) and Hunted (developed by inXile Entertainment). The DOOM series is widely credited as bringing FPS gaming to the mainstream. Early titles in the franchise ran on light hardware and still entertain today. They have an air of simplicity that does away with today’s obsession with narrative, writing and acting and replaces it with fun entertainment. Even today, people keep on coming back to it because it’s just a joy to play.
Developers and publishers have realised this and have ported the series to more platforms like the GBA and most recently, the Xbox Live Arcade. The DOOM port surprised everybody. It played just like the original and had all the fancy high-tech grubbins that get fanboys all riled up. It came back to the central DOOM ethos: it was fun and challenging to play. Nerve Software (the developers in charge of the port) got it. People wanted DOOM without anything superfluous, just the same great gameplay. DOOM II delivers on this premise too.
