World of Warcraft has been perched high atop the massively-multiplayer throne for seven years now, but is about to get its first serious dose of competition when the Electronic Arts-published Star Wars: The Old Republic launches. While it’s not really a shock to learn that some folks have already indicated that they’ll be leaving Azeroth for a galaxy far, far away, a new survey indicates that WoW could shed anywhere between 900,000 and 1.6M players   Read More ...

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are at it again. Yes. Again. Are they ever happy? On Monday, the controversial organization issued a press release attacking iconic Nintendo mascot Mario for wearing a ‘Tanooki’ suit in his latest adventure, the Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land, which hit shelves on Sunday. “Tanooki may be just a “suit” in Mario games, but by wearing the skin of an   Read More ...

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft MMO has shed 1.1 million subscribers in the past six months, the developer has announced. As revealed in an investor call earlier today and reported by Massively, player numbers have fallen 10 per cent to 10.3 million compared to 11.4 million in May this year. CEO Mike Morhaime explained that most of that decline was seen in the East. It’s been a year since the last major expansion, 2010′s   Read More ...

Today, Ubisoft confirmed what many probably already knew. Another Assassin’s Creed title is planned for 2012. Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, reassured shareholders there would be plenty of Desmond in our lives. “There will be another great full-fledged Assassin’s Creed title next year,” Guillemot said. “It will be another major release and we will be communicating more about it in the coming months.” Assassin’s Creed: Revelations will conclude Ezio and Altair’s story line. Assassin’s Creed 3, which   Read More ...

All things considered, box art is really the final barrier between a consumer and a game. For the most part publishers get it right, or near enough. At the very least, things are a lot better than they used to be. Everybody’s seen this one; it’s generally regarded as the worst video game box art of all time. The mistake here, you see, was drawing the art with your eyes   Read More ...

Several team members came through San Francisco last month to show off The Missing Link, and while they admitted it’s slotted during a certain moment towards the end of Human Revolution that makes convenient narrative sense, they were adament this was not content cut from   Read More ...

“You can see the game is very focused on that horror atmosphere, so it’s not made for co-op play,” said producer Masachika Kawata in conversation with Eurogamer back in June. “We’re focusing on the single player this time.” But did he lie? Did he put the wool over our eyes?!  Looking at the official Japanese site, it reveals that the game supports “2 people” in “communication-play mode.” The site also lists “local play, Internet   Read More ...

Just like Japan, in the US there’ll be a 20MB download limit attached to the 3G version of the PlayStation Vita, Sony announced yesterday. The limit of course only applies to data being downloaded over a 3G network; if you’re downloading via wi-fi, on either the 3G or wi-fi-only models of the Vita, you can grab bits and bytes to your heart’s content. Interestingly, Sony explains that the limit has   Read More ...

“We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment (“Networks”) services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database. In this case, given that the data tested against   Read More ...

Here’s a very interesting video I stumbled upon on PennyArcade and figured I’d share it with you. It covers the Survival Horror genre and how it seems to be faaaading away… Personally, I’m a huuuge fan of Survival Horror classics like Silent Hill and Resident Evil and I, too, have been wondering why Survival Horror seems to be making an exit from gaming. Don’t get me wrong, they still release   Read More ...
